What is hot lemon water?

Julia Franckh

Simply put (because this one is really that simple): it’s a cup of hot water with the freshly squeezed juice of half a lemon. If you want to be fancy you can add some sliced ginger or some mint leaves to mix up the flavour. Ideally, it’s drank first thing in the morning, ie. on an empty stomach which according to Women’s Health boosts your metabolism.

 Why should I care?

  • Well for starters it’s another way to get hydrated. Lemon water tends to taste more exciting than just a glass of water so it’s a great way to make sure your hydration is on point. Especially as a way to re-hydrate first thing in the morning. According to the National Sleep Foundation, we lose a lot of fluid in our sleep by breathing (and snoring) and by having to compensate for environmental conditions (rooms that are too hot or too dry).
  • Vitamin C & antioxidants! By drinking lemon water you can get some of your recommended daily intake of vitamin C, which helps boost your immune system. Lemons also contain antioxidants that help rejuvenate your skin and help clear it up (from this is Insider).
  • To follow the point made earlier it helps your digestive system, which can help with bloating and indigestion as lemons act as a diuretic and help decrease salt and water retention in the body (from this is Insider).

Why I (Julia) like it?

Regardless of the benefits, it makes a great morning ritual. There is something soothing about getting up and making a cup of hot lemon water first thing in the morning- leaving me refreshed and energised, ready to take on the day. Since I’ve stopped drinking coffee first thing in the morning this also provides a wonderful replacement.

Outstanding questions?

The benefits found might just be from an increase in water consumption, rather than the addition of the fresh lemon juice. But I don’t really care- I’m a fan of hot lemon water regardless. Because when life gives me lemons, I make hot lemon water!
